Below are 8 tips for writing your résumé to help you stand out and advance to the next step in the interview process. The most critical element at the beginning of your job search is your résumé because it is the first impression that you get to make with your potential employer. This is the first opportunity you have to show your employers why you stand out above the crowd. Make sure your résumé is enticing and has the recruiter wanting more so they will take the next step in setting up an interview where you can dazzle them in person. Applying for jobs may feel like a lot of work, but you know it will pay off in the end.
- Check and re-check for typos, grammar, and spelling mistakes.
- Use a clean and simple format so it’s easy to read. A résumé is only in a hiring manager’s hands less than 14 seconds!
- Highlight your skills, relevant courses, and the training you have received.
- Use action-oriented words. Avoid using past-tense and pronouns like me and I.
- List your jobs and experience in reverse chronological order.
- Mirror your work experience to the job for which you are applying.
- Be transparent and thorough by providing details and dates.
- Include a self profile or summary to introduce yourself to potential interviewers. Remember, a résumé gets you the interview but the interview gets you the job, so be succinct.
