Meet Becki!
Practical Nursing student at Beckfield College
Becki, a current PN student at Beckfield, shares the inspiring story of her journey to becoming a nurse and the strength and determination she received from caring for her daughter who suffered a long battle with a heart condition. Becki’s story left us in awe of her love for her daughter and following her dreams of becoming a nurse so she can continue to care for others in her daughter’s memory.
Favorite Course: BIO152 Anatomy (I even bought a skeleton to help study the bones)
Favorite Instructor: Bonnie Ormes has been one of my biggest cheerleaders in school. She is a great instructor with lots of experiences to share. For me, she helped me through my struggle. Always helped me stay on track even on the days I was ready to run away from it all. She listened when I was falling apart, and I just didn’t think I had it in me to continue. She helped me realize Maggie is always with me and my purpose is still the same, to be more driven to complete the courses she taught.
Tell us your “Why.” My why was my Maggie. My daughter was my everything. She had hypoplastic left heart syndrome, had a stroke during surgery as an infant, and had a tracheostomy for almost 9 years. She was the strongest little girl with the biggest smile and so much love in her heart. She made me want to be more for myself and the best mom possible for her. It took me a long time to realize I was a nurse in training most of my life.
Who are your biggest supporters? Family and friends have always been there to support me through my goals. For years I have struggled with wanting to go back to school. Maggie sat with me most nights while I studied watching her tablet while I read through chapters and highlighted everything. She reminded me when it was time for a snuggle break. I probably miss this the most.
Why Beckfield? Beckfield has been a good fit for me. The campus is close and when I visited, I was relieved to see several “adult” students. It was not easy convincing myself to go back to school 30 years after I graduated. I have made many life-long friends since I have started the nursing program.
Advice to new students: For new students at Beckfield I hope they know they can do this. Life continues around us and we need to find a way to be more for ourselves and others. It helps me to have a schedule and write a weekly and daily to-do list. Believe in yourself and be kind. If we can do this, then I believe the people around us will too.
We lost Maggie on April 6. After 20 years, she again was fighting her battle, for 46 days at Children’s Hospital but her heart disease won. It was the beginning of my 3rd semester. I was/am still broken, but she is my strength and my purpose. I hope I can help others through their journey. The life I have lived because of Maggie has taught me so much. I want to help do something good for others with that experience.
